WE HOPE TO HOST HER AGAIN AT SOME POINT IN THE FUTURE, BUT THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED.

Local singer/songwriter, Beccy Atherton completes a wonderful series of acoustic events at Kings Coffee and Books in Dumfries this summer. Beccy’s event is next Saturday, 29th September, from 7.30pm. As with all Kings’ summer events, there’s no charge, but there will be a buskers bucket for donations to the artist.

Kings manager, Helen Smith commented, “We’re had a feast of good music throughout the summer, all locally produced singers and musicians, with amazing talents. It’s been so good to be able to showcase people like Zoe Bestel, Dave Bass, Sean vs the Robots, Deedee Ray and Darcy daSilva. Beccy thrilled a packed audience last January when she performed in Kings as part of the Big Burns Supper, so it’s great to have her back again to wrap up our acoustic summer series.”

After two E.P’s Beccy is currently experimenting within the acoustic/folk scene taking inspiration from artists such as Nick Drake, Ray Lamontagne and more contemporary artists such as Benjamin Francis Leftwich and Laura Marling.

Catch a glimpse of Beccy and sample some songs on her Facebook page: Facebook.com/BeccyAthertonUK

It’s a free event, with a busker’s bucket for donations to the artist.

This event was originally planned to take place on Saturday 15th September, but has been postponed due to the Youthbeatz festival in Dock Park, Dumfries the same night.

Darcy lives in Moniaive. She’s inspired by the countryside and the interesting people she meets.

They say she inherited much of her musical talent from her family, recording with her step-Dad at her home. As her family are traditional musicians themselves, music has always been part of Darcy’s life. A former student of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and a classically trained pianist, she is a natural performer. She has a love of literature and the poets which shines through in her writing and performance. As well as a singer and pianist, Darcy is a multi-instrumentalist, specialising in guitar, fiddle and accordion. Her debut EP (“Make Me a Bird”) was recorded after Darcy spent a year studying music in Glasgow and she is currently working on her first album. Darcy has collaborated with musicians such as Aaron Jones, Karine Polwart and Phil Cunningham and is currently working with BBC Radio Scotland Young Musician of the Year finalist Alistair Ogilvy.

She began a collaborative project with fellow folk artist, Malcolm Bushby in October 2011, Darcy and Malcolm have established themselves as two of the traditional music scenes most talented up and coming musicians. They have played venues such as The Jazz Bar (Edinburgh), The Tron Theatre (Glasgow) and The Tolbooth (Stirling). Malcolm’s sensitive playing compliments Darcy’s emotive and insightful songs. As the two musicians are avid composers, they are writing together to create a new and beautiful sound. Recently, the duo played at the Wickerman festival and the 2012 Dumfries’ Big Burns Supper alongside Emily Smith and Eddi Reader.

Kings manager, Helen Smith said, “Darcy loves collaborating and is always willing to share her music; we’re delighted to be hosting her in Kings, especially when she’s often seen delighting in our coffee and cakes!”

PLEASE NOTE – JADE IS UNABLE TO SING, DUE TO TONSILLITIS, BUT SUPPORT ACT, FORGETTING JANE, PLUS AIDEN HALLIDAY WILL BE THERE IN HER PLACE.

We’re approaching half way through the Kings Summer Acoustic Music series. This Saturday night (11th August) features Jade Walters, from Dumfries, supported by Forgetting Jane, also from Dumfries.

Kings manager, Helen Smith commented, “We’ve enjoyed DeeDee Ray, Dave Bass and Zoë Bestel (along with friends they brought to support them), so now we look forward to building on that success, with Jade. Every night the atmosphere has been so nice – people hanging out together in a coffee shop on a Saturday night – and we’ve had lots of great appreciative comments from the crowds who have turned up.”

Jade’s not one to boast about her music, but her talent pushes her forward. “Music is something I just flow with and take it as it comes. My own songs, and the covers I sing all have a deep down meaning to me. I hope to express that on the night.”

One of Jade’s major influences is Johnny Cash. After watching his film, she was hooked; she picked up a guitar and just did what felt right. She has a single on iTunes which was released in March, called ‘Words in the Rainbow Wave’, which propelled her forward.

Forgetting Jane, her support act, comprises young Chris Edgar, from Dumfries and he’s popping in to support Jade en route to his gig in The Venue at 10pm the same evening.

The event in Kings Coffee and Books (next to Burtons/Dorothy Perkins) in Dumfries town centre, runs from 7.30pm till about 10pm on Saturday 11th August. There’s no charge, but people are encouraged to give into the ‘Busker’s bucket’ for the artists, if they like what they hear!

She’s bringing her own support act. The event opens at 7.30pm, with music throughout the evening.

There’s no charge for the event, but there will be a ‘busker’s bucket’ for donations to the artist.

Zoë Bestel is a singer, songwriter and musician who, within her first year has gained admiration from the press, prestigious accolades and supported internationally acclaimed musicians. As a songwriter Zoë’s quirky storytelling style has been likened to: Kate Nash, Eliza Doolittle and Lily Allen.

She’s a little girl with a BIG dream and, in a society where self esteem is lacking in so many of her peers, is quickly becoming a role model for other young girls to purse their ambitions. Born in Liverpool and raised in Galloway, South West Scotland, Zoë’s been playing and singing most of her young life. Armed with just her trusty ukulele and her voice – ‘she does simple beautifully’. Her writing is direct and lyrical and on stage she performs with all the poise of someone twice her age. Zoë was signed to Distilled Records after only her third gig, a shrewd move as it turns out.

Zoë loves to play live and hasn’t stopped since picking up the ukulele in 2011 at the age of just 13. Everywhere she performs she wins fans and admirers from across the generations. She is perfectly placed being only 14 to tap directly into the teenage psyche, but her songs are accessible and clever enough for the oldest of music fans to relate to. Zoë wrote her debut single ’35 Missed Calls’ from her own youthful experience and this song has charmed every audience lucky enough to have seen her perform it live, be it in concert or busking in her home town.

Her early musical influences were: Jamie Cullum, Paulo Nutini, Taylor Swift, Avril Lavigne, KT Tunstall and Kate Bush. On her iPod are: Snow Patrol, Cold Play and Mutemath. Her parents made her listen to: Leonard Cohen, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, George Harrison, The Who and The Beach Boys!

Deedee’s music revolves around her incredibly distinctive voice. We first heard her when she supported Beccy Atherton during the Big Burns Supper gig in Kings last January. Everyone was so impressed by Deedee’s performance that we decided she deserved a night headlining!

The acoustic night starts around 7.30pm, with Deedee’s support; Twine, from Carlisle.
